Godless Perverts Social Club, Tuesday August 4!

July 6, 2015 by Greta Christina Leave a Comment

We’re having a Godless Perverts Social Club on Tuesday, August 4!

Community is one of the reasons we started Godless Perverts. There are few enough places to land when you decide that you’re an atheist; far fewer if you’re also LGBT, queer, kinky, poly, trans, or are just interested in sexuality. And the sex-positive/ alt-sex/ whatever- you- want- to- call- it community isn’t always the most welcoming place for non-believers. All orientations, genders, and kinks (or lack thereof) are welcome.

So please join us at Wicked Grounds, 289 8th Street at Folsom in San Francisco (near Civic Center BART). We meet on the first Tuesday and the third Thursday of every month. 7-9 pm. Admission is free, but we ask that you buy food and/or drink at the cafe if you can: they have beverages, light snacks, full meals, and milkshakes made of literal awesome sauce.

Godless Perverts presents and promotes a positive view of sexuality without religion, by and for sex-positive atheists, agnostics, humanists, and other non-believers, through performance events, panel discussions, social gatherings, media productions, and other appropriate outlets. Our events and media productions present depictions, explorations, and celebrations of godless sexualities — including positive, traumatic, and complex experiences — focusing on the intersections of sexuality with atheism, materialism, skepticism, and science, as well as critical, questioning, mocking, or blasphemous views of sex and religion.

Godless Perverts is committed to feminism, diversity, inclusivity, and social justice. We seek to create safe and welcoming environments for all non-believers and believing allies who are respectful of the mission, and are committed to taking positive action to achieve this. Please let the moderators or other people in charge of any event know if you encounter harassment, racism, misogyny, transphobia, or other problems at our events.

If you want to be notified about all our Godless Perverts events, sign up for our email mailing list, or follow us on Twitter at @GodlessPerverts. You can also sign up for the Bay Area Atheists/ Agnostics/ Humanists/ Freethinkers/ Skeptics Meetup page, and be notified of all sorts of godless Bay Area events — including the Godless Perverts. And of course, you can always visit our Website to find out what we’re up to, godlessperverts.com. Hope to see you soon!

Godless Perverts Social Club, Thursday July 16: After Marriage Equality, What’s Next?

July 5, 2015 by Greta Christina Leave a Comment

We’re having a Godless Perverts Social Club on Thursday, July 16! We’re picking a discussion topic ahead of time — and this time, the topic is After Marriage Equality, What’s Next?

Marriage equality is now legal across the U.S. So what’s next for sexual and gender politics? In the fight for secular sexual liberation and against the religious right, what issues should be our priority? Should we be focusing on transgender rights, employment and housing discrimination, homelessness among LGBT teens? Should polyamorous marriage be on the table? How shall queer communities face the problems of racism and classism? And how can atheists and skeptics support the fight for secular, evidence-based policies about gender and sex?

The Godless Perverts Social Club meets on the first Tuesday and the third Thursday of every month. Community is one of the reasons we started Godless Perverts. Godless Perverts Social Club Thursday 6/18: Secular Sexual Transcendence

June 15, 2015 by Greta Christina Leave a Comment

The next Godless Perverts Social Club is Thursday, June 18! We’re picking a discussion topic ahead of time — and this time, the topic is Secular Sexual Transcendence.

Sexual experiences can have a lot in common with what people describe as religious experiences: an ecstatic high, heightened sensory perception, being intensely present in the present moment. In fact, some religions see sexual experiences as inextricably linked with spiritual experiences, and incorporate sex into their practices. How can atheists and other non-believers frame these experiences without thinking of them as supernatural? And how can we discuss and share them with believers? What common grounds, if any, can sexual experiences allow both the theists and atheists to reach?

Our co-moderator for the evening, Ali Faruqi works a researcher at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Ali grew up in Karachi, Pakistan in a Muslim family. He has struggled with faith since end of his high school and considers himself to be an agnostic for all practical purposes. He is interested in science, philosophy and history and believes that religions can best be analyzed in light of these disciplines. He is also interested in understanding and exploring sexual identities, orientations and practices, free from religious dogma.

So please join us! All orientations, genders, and kinks (or lack thereof) welcome. Godless Perverts Social Club, Thursday May 21

May 18, 2015 by Greta Christina Leave a Comment

Come hang out with Godless Perverts! The Godless Perverts Social Club is the socializing/ hanging out branch of the Godless Perverts. Community is one of the reasons we started the organization. So please join us!

This is one of our casual meetups — we’re not picking a topic ahead of time, we’ll just talk about whatever comes up. Usually related to sex, sexuality, gender, atheism, religion, skepticism, science, etc. — but not always.

All Social Clubs are at Wicked Grounds, San Francisco’s renowned BDSM-themed coffee house — 289 8th St in San Francisco. It’s near Civic Center BART, and there’s usually at least some street parking nearby (although this being San Francisco, we make no guarantees). All orientations, genders, and kinks (or lack thereof) are welcome. 7:00 – 9:00 pm. There’s no admission, but we ask that you buy food and drink at the counter if you can to support the venue. (Their food is quite yummy, with both full dinners and lighter snacks/ beverages, and they have the best milkshakes in town.)

(Here’s our mission statement.) Please let the moderators or other people in charge of any event know if you encounter harassment, racism, misogyny, transphobia, or other problems at our events.

Hope to see you there!

Godless Perverts is Not for Everyone: What Inclusivity Means to Us, and What It Doesn’t Mean

December 8, 2014 by Godless Perverts Leave a Comment

A Joint Statement by Greta Christina and Chris Hall

Godless Perverts is not for everyone.

We mean that in the gentler, more informal sense of the term: Not everyone is going to like it. Not everyone is going to enjoy discussion groups, entertainments, or parties centered on godless views of sexuality. They may not enjoy our frank, explicit explorations of sex, including a wide variety of unconventional sexualities; they may not enjoy the views of religion that come up in our meetups and entertainments — some of which are harshly critical and mocking, others of which are sympathetic. That’s okay. We can’t be all things to all people, and we’re fine with that.

But we’re also not for everyone in the somewhat harsher sense of the term: We are not open to everybody. There are going to be times when we have to tell people they’re not welcome.

This is hard. Almost everyone has had painful experiences with being told, openly or otherwise, that they’re not welcome in a group. Almost all of us have had painful experiences being picked last for a team at school, or being treated like an outcast at a social event. The two of us certainly have. It’s a difficult thing to experience, and it’s not an experience we dole out lightly. (The Geek Social Fallacies can be very seductive, including Geek Social Fallacy #1: Ostracizers Are Evil.) But the unfortunate reality is that if we want to create a welcoming space for people who support and value our mission, we will sometimes have to ask people to leave. [Read more…]

Why Secular Hedonism Needs Social Justice

Why Secular Hedonism Needs Social Justice

Originally published at FreethoughtBlogs

I’m going to go out on a limb here. If we want to create and maintain a secular society that values pleasure? If we want to create and maintain a society that recognizes that this life is the only one we have, so we should experience it and enjoy it as richly as we can? If we want to create and maintain a society that understands that our bodies are all we have, and that values those bodies? If we want to create and maintain a society that that recognizes pleasure, not as the only part of life worth working towards, but as one part of that life, and an important one?

We need to fight for social justice.
