Godless Perverts Holiday Fun Time – Benefit for St. James Infirmary! NOW AT CENTER FOR SEX AND CULTURE!

December 2, 2016 by Greta Christina

LOCATION CHANGE! The Godless Perverts Holiday Fun Time party is now at the Center for Sex and Culture, 1349 Mission St. in San Francisco, between 9th and 10th Streets, near the Civic Center BART station.

Godless Perverts is throwing our annual Holiday Fun Time party on Saturday, December 10, 8-11 pm! Who says the holidays are only for the believers? Just as families don’t stop giving presents after the kids realize that Santa is a fake, the godless can have a great time during the holidays even without any gods, deities, angels, or spirits watching over them. And Godless Perverts Holiday Fun Time is just the place to do it! It’s at the Center for Sex and Culture, 1349 Mission St. in San Francisco, between 9th and 10th Streets, near the Civic Center BART station. (Yes, the location has changed! This is the new, correct location.) And this year, we’re making it a fundraiser for St. James Infirmary, the health clinic for sex workers in San Francisco!

We’ll have:

Festive food and drink! It’s a potluck: we’ll provide food, but we’d love to add your holiday treats to the buffet.
Adorably ridiculous icebreaker games!
Atheist holiday songs, celebrating the improper, twisted, and just plain silly!
Door prizes, including books and DVDs that are godless, pervy, or both!

And this year, Donna will be doing debaptisms! In fact, she’ll undo any religious initiation ceremony you like. Baptisms, confirmations, Bar or Bat Mitzvahs, Wiccanings — you name it, she’ll undo it! Donna is a fully certified Humanist celebrant, so when you’re debaptised, you stay that way.

Blasphemous costumes, sexy costumes, awesome combinations of the above, and other festive garb are encouraged, but by no means required.

This year’s party is a benefit for St. James Infirmary. St. James is a unique healthcare resource, even in San Francisco. Founded by and for sex workers, they provide free, compassionate and nonjudgmental healthcare and social services for current and former sex workers of all genders and sexual orientations. We wholeheartedly support the organization, and we want to help them out. So all donations collected at the party will go directly to St. James Infirmary. Last year we raised over $900 for them: let’s see if we can beat that this year!

We’re asking for donations of $10-$20 at the door — but please just donate what you can, whether that’s less than $10, or more than $20. (We’re also collecting funds now to cover the costs of throwing the party — please help make it happen if you can!)

Godless Perverts Holiday Fun Time is at the Center for Sex and Culture, 1349 Mission St. in San Francisco, between 9th and 10th Streets, near the Civic Center BART station. (Please note the new, correct location!) Saturday, December 10, 8:00 to 11:00 pm. We hope to see you there!

Godless Perverts Social Club in SF! Discussion topic: Participating in a Resistance Movement

September 9, 2016 by Greta Christina

We’re having a Godless Perverts Social Club in San Francisco at Wicked Grounds, 289 8th St., on Tuesday, December 6! 7-9 pm. Our discussion topic: Participating in a Resistance Movement.

How can atheists and alt-sex people participate in a resistance movement? What do we uniquely have to offer? Some of us have limited time, resources, abilities — what can we do? In the coming months and years, more people will be needing more help — how can we step up our game and help them, without burning out? What can we do to resist white supremacy, misogyny, anti-queer hatred, anti-trans hatred, and other forms of systematic oppression? What can we learn from the history of other resistance movements? How can we take care of each other?

Note: This meetup is open to all nonbelievers, and all believers supportive of our mission, who want Godless Perverts to be part of a resistance movement in the new world. If that doesn’t describe you, please consider whether this particular meetup is the right one for you, and please don’t attend just to argue against this goal. Thanks.

Community is one of the reasons we started Godless Perverts. There are few enough places to land when you decide that you’re an atheist; far fewer if you’re also LGBT, queer, kinky, poly, trans, or are just interested in sexuality. And the sex-positive/ alt-sex/ whatever- you- want- to- call- it community isn’t always the most welcoming place for non-believers.

So please join us! Hang out with other nonbelievers and chat about sex, sexuality, gender, atheism, religion, science, social justice, pop culture, and more. All orientations, genders, and kinks (or lack thereof) are welcome.

We meet on the first Tuesday of every month at Wicked Grounds, 289 8th Street at Folsom in San Francisco (near Civic Center BART). 7-9 pm. Admission is free: we ask that you get food and/or drink at the cafe if you can, Wicked Grounds’ customers have bought beverages “for the wall” if you want to attend and can’t afford cafe prices.

Godless Perverts presents and promotes a positive view of sexuality without religion, by and for sex-positive atheists, agnostics, humanists, and other non-believers, through performance events, panel discussions, social gatherings, media productions, and other appropriate outlets. Our events and media productions present depictions, explorations, and celebrations of godless sexualities — including positive, traumatic, and complex experiences — focusing on the intersections of sexuality with atheism, materialism, skepticism, and science, as well as critical, questioning, mocking, or blasphemous views of sex and religion.

Godless Perverts is committed to feminism, diversity, inclusivity, and social justice. We seek to create safe and welcoming environments for all non-believers and believing allies who are respectful of the mission, and are committed to taking positive action to achieve this. Please let the moderators or other people in charge of any event know if you encounter harassment, racism, misogyny, transphobia, or other problems at our events.

If you want to be notified about all our Godless Perverts events, sign up for our email mailing list, follow us on Twitter at @GodlessPerverts, or follow us on Facebook. You can also sign up for the Bay Area Atheists/ Agnostics/ Humanists/ Freethinkers/ Skeptics Meetup page, and be notified of all sorts of godless Bay Area events — including many Godless Perverts events. And of course, you can always visit our Website to find out what we’re up to, godlessperverts.com. Hope to see you soon!

Godless Perverts Social Club in SF! Discussion topic: The Future of Godless Perverts

September 9, 2016 by Greta Christina

We’re having a Godless Perverts Social Club in San Francisco on Tuesday, October 4! We have a specific discussion topic this time: The Future of Godless Perverts. Where do you want to see Godless Perverts in a year, two years, five years? Godless Perverts is incorporating as a non-profit — and when we do, we’ll be able to take on new and different kinds of projects. What ideas do you have? What would you want to participate in? Chris and Greta will be presenting our own ideas, and taking suggestions from the community.

Community is one of the reasons we started Godless Perverts. There are few enough places to land when you decide that you’re an atheist; far fewer if you’re also LGBT, queer, kinky, poly, trans, or are just interested in sexuality. Admission is free, although we do ask that you buy food and/or drink at the venue if you can: Wicked Grounds has beverages, light snacks, full meals, and milkshakes made of literal awesome sauce.

Godless Perverts Social Club in Oakland! Discussion Topic: Sex, Politics, and Religion

September 9, 2016 by Greta Christina

We’re having a Godless Perverts Social Club in our wonderful downtown Oakland location on Thursday, September 15! Our discussion topic for this evening: Sex, Politics, and Religion. As the 2016 election enters its closing months, the intersections of sex, politics, and religion are more visibly volatile than ever. Come join us for a discussion about current events and how secular progressives can respond with solutions that aren’t based on religion, misogyny, or sexual stigma.

Some of the important issues we’ll be talking about include:

* Proposition 60: Should porn actors have to wear condoms and other protection on set? At first glance, it sounds good, but this proposed law has been broadly opposed by adult actors and models throughout the industry, even those who already work with condoms in all scenes.
* Pre-exposure prophylaxis: New drugs may allow prevention of HIV/AIDS by taking medication before unprotected sex. There are exciting possibilities, but some organizations are opposed. Are there reasons for opposing this treatment, or is it just old-fashioned slut-shaming?
* The HPV vaccine has shown remarkable success in reducing rates of cervical cancer. And yet, ten years after it was first approved, many parents are vocally opposed to letting their children get the vaccine, claiming that it will encourage sexual activity.

The Social Club will be on Thursday, September 15, 7-9 pm, at Rudy’s Can’t Fail Cafe, 1805 Telegraph Avenue, next to the Fox Theater (and right near the 19th St. Oakland BART station). Rudy’s Can’t Fail is a fun, friendly space that serves meals, small bites, beer, cocktails, soft drinks, and desserts. We’re meeting in the back room/ dining car, which is ridiculously cute: the dining car has somewhat limited space, probably enough for all of us, but it’s a good idea to arrive on time if you want to be sure to get a seat. Admission is free, although we do ask that you buy food and/or drink at the venue if you can. The Oakland Social Clubs are on the third Thursday of the month (First Tuesdays are still in San Francisco at Wicked Grounds.)

Godless Perverts Story Hour in SF, Saturday August 27!

August 24, 2016 by Greta Christina

We have a Godless Perverts Story Hour coming up in San Francisco on Saturday, August 29! The Story Hour is the performance/ entertainment/ literary reading branch of the Godless Perverts empire — we’ll be bringing you depictions, explorations, and celebrations of godless sexualities, as well as critical, mocking, and blasphemous views of sex and religion. And we’re very excited to be bringing in an out-of-town performer — Heina Dadabhoy!

Heina Dadabhoy

Heina Dadabhoy spent their childhood as a practicing Muslim who never in their right mind would have believed that they would grow up to be an atheist feminist secular humanist and a pansexual genderqueer switch to boot. Heina has been an active participant in atheist organizations and events in and around Orange County, CA since 2007, and on the national stage since 2011. You may have heard them at Skepticon, the American Atheists National Convention, the Huffington Post Live, and Have Your Say on the BBC World Service or read about them in the New York Times.

Our other readers and performers for the evening include Donna Jay, Juba Kalamka, Ember Atwell, Michaela Goldhaber, and co-hosts Greta Christina and Chris Hall.

Juba Kalamka 100 Ember Atwell 100 Michaela Goldhaber Greta Christina 100 Chris Hall 100

So please join us at the for an evening about how to have good sex without having any gods, goddesses, spirits, or their earthly representatives hanging over your shoulder and telling you that you’re doing it wrong. The evening’s entertainment will have a range of voices — sexy and serious, passionate and funny, and all of the above — talking about how our sexualities can not only exist, but even thrive, without the supernatural.

The event is at the Center for Sex and Culture, 1349 Mission St. in San Francisco, near Civic Center BART. Admission is a sliding scale, $10-$20, with no-one turned away for lack of funds. Proceeds go to the Center for Sex and Culture. Hope to see you there!

Godless Perverts Social Club in Oakland, Thursday Aug. 18 — Parlor Games!

July 21, 2016 by Greta Christina

We’re having a Godless Perverts Social Club in our wonderful downtown Oakland location on Thursday, August 18. And we’re doing something new this time! Our game nights in San Francisco are among our most popular events — but our meetup space in Oakland doesn’t work for tabletop games. So we’re having Parlor Games Night!

We’ve compiled a list of games that can be played sitting in one place, with no equipment other than paper and pen (which we’ll provide). And some games don’t even need that! Just people, words, and brains. Scroll to the end of this announcement to see a list of games, with brief summaries — or just click here. And if you have favorites that aren’t listed, please let us know!

The Social Club will be on Thursday, August 18, 7-9 pm, at Rudy’s Can’t Fail Cafe, 1805 Telegraph Avenue, next to the Fox Theater (and right near the 19th St. Oakland BART station). PARLOR GAMES

Two Truths and a Lie. Each player says three things about themselves, two truths and one lie. The other players guess/vote on which one is the lie. If you feel like scoring, each guesser gets one point for each correct guess, and the guessee gets one point for each person they fooled.

Telephone. The classic, and a good game for skeptics. One person whispers a short phrase to the next person, who then whispers what they heard to the next. The last person says the sentence they heard out loud.

Don’t Get Me Started. Each player in turn is given a topic to rant about, presumably a pretty innocuous one, and then makes up a complaining rant about it.

Questions. Players have a conversation in which all the statements are questions. (Example: “Would you like to play Questions?” “How do you play Questions?” “You mean you’ve never played Questions before?”) No statements, rhetorical questions, or repetitions of previous questions.

Outright Lie. Players pass a small object around the circle (or simply identify an object) and make up incredible stories about it. Example: “This necklace was buried in my grandmother’s yard in a sealed envelope from an anonymous lover.” If you want to keep score, the players vote on the best story.

If You Were A Tree… Each player in turn thinks of a famous person. Other players try to guess who they’re thinking of by asking questions like, “If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?” “If you were a food item…” “If you were a building…”

Boticelli. Sort of like Twenty Questions. Each player in turn thinks of a famous person (alive or dead) who all the other players will be familiar with. They say the first initial of that person’s last name (e.g., if you’d picked Boticelli, you’d say, “I’m a B.”). The other players get a chance to ask a yes-or-no narrowing down question, by making guesses that might stump the “judge.” (Example: “Were you a catcher for the Cincinnati Reds?” If the “judge” says, “No, I am not Johnny Bench,” they don’t get a yes-or-no narrowing down question. If the “judge” doesn’t know who the guesser is asking about, the guesser gets a yes-or-no narrowing down question (like, “Are you alive?” “Are you in the arts?” “Are you a woman?”) Once the field has been narrowed, stumping questions have to fit the narrowed field (i.e., once it’s been determined that the person is alive, guessers can’t ask stumping questions about dead people).

Primes. Good for people who like numbers. Players go around in a circle counting off the numbers starting with 2 (2, 3, 4…) — except instead of saying the number, they replace any prime number with a word, and any composite number with the words of the primes it’s made of. So the first player might say “Plum” for 2, the next might say “Gem” for 3, the next would say “Plum Plum” for 4, the next might say “Dogs” for 5, the next would say “Plum Gem” for 6…

And of course, there are various variations on group storytelling.

If paper and pens are a workable option, some other options are:

Dictionary. Each player in turn picks an obscure word from the dictionary. Other players make up definitions. All definitions including the real one are read out loud. Players guess which one is the real one. If you feel like scoring, players gets one point for everyone who guessed their fake definition, and the “judge” gets one point for every wrong guess.

Telephone Pictionary. Each player starts with a piece of paper and a pencil. At the top of the paper, each player writes a sentence. Then they pass the papers to their left. The next player “draws” the sentence a la Pictionary, then folds the paper so only the drawing is visible and passes it to their left. The next player looks at the drawing and writes a sentence that they think the drawing represents. This continues until all players have their original paper back, and players read the garbles sentences out loud.

Story Train. Each player writes a sentence and passes it on to the next player, who does the same, folding the previous sentence over so each new player can only read one previous sentence. When everyone’s written on every paper, the pieces are read out loud.

Exquisite Corpse. Each player writes down a word, folds the paper, and passes it to the next player, who then writes another word and repeats. All players choosing words that are in the same part of speech at the same time (i.e., all sentences will end up in the structure “adjective, noun, verb, adjective, noun.”) Sentences are read out loud.

Various “who wrote this?” guessing games. All players write the answer to some question (“what’s your favorite animal?” “what was the first piece of music you bought with your own money?”), the papers are mixed up, and players guess who wrote what. Alternatively, each player writes a fact about themselves, the papers are mixed up, and players guess who wrote what.

Godless Perverts Social Club in SF Tuesday, August 2! Discussion Topic: Sex, Secularism, and Pop Culture

July 21, 2016 by Greta Christina

We’re having a Godless Perverts Social Club in San Francisco on Tuesday, August 2! We have a specific discussion topic this time: Sex, Secularism, and Pop Culture. How have religious values shaped our pop culture depictions of sex and gender? Why are atheists in pop culture so often depicted as cerebral and socially inept, with difficulty connecting to others — sexually or otherwise? Are there counterexamples? How can atheists and atheist communities push back? Join Godless Perverts for a fun, lively discussion of sex, gender, religion, and atheism, in movies, TV, video games, music, and more.

Godless Perverts Social Club April 5: What Do We Mean By Sex? Sex, Language, and Inclusivity

April 4, 2016 by Greta Christina Leave a Comment

We’re having a Godless Perverts Social Club on Tuesday, April 5! We have a specific discussion topic this time: What Do We Mean By Sex? Sex, Language, and Inclusivity. Overly narrow definitions of sex can leave queers and kinky people out in the cold. Overly broad ones can do the same for asexual people. Religion and science have both tried to define and control sexual language, to the detriment of pretty much everyone. How can we support people’s right to self-definition, and still communicate coherently? How do we accept the ways that language evolves naturally, without letting it be controlled by the majority? Is there a difference between language and labels? Come to the Godless Perverts Social Club for a friendly and vigorous discussion of how we talk about sex.

Community is one of the reasons we started Godless Perverts. There are few enough places to land when you decide that you’re an atheist; far fewer if you’re also LGBT, queer, kinky, poly, trans, or are just interested in sexuality.

(We also meet on the third Thursday of every month at Rudy’s Can’t Fail in downtown Oakland.) 7-9 pm. Admission is free, although we do ask that you buy food and/or drink at the venue if you can: Wicked Grounds has beverages, light snacks, full meals, and milkshakes made of literal awesome sauce.

Godless Perverts Social Club in San Francisco – Game Night!

December 11, 2015 by Greta Christina

Godless Perverts is having another game night! Our first one in November was a rousing success, so it’s back by popular demand, on Tuesday, January 5. As you may have noticed, Wicked Grounds has a huge stash of games including chess and checkers, Cards Against Humanity, ((If you decide to play CAH, please be cautious; it can be a really hard game between people who don’t know each other and aren’t familiar with each others’ limits and triggers.)) Scrabble, Fluxx, Slash, Gloom, and much, much more. Feel free to bring your own games if you’re not sure that Wicked Grounds has a copy of your favorite.

Godless Perverts: Our Policies on Building Safer Spaces

All orientations, genders, and kinks (or lack thereof) are welcome. So please join us at Wicked Grounds, the kink cafe and boutique, at 289 8th Street at Folsom in San Francisco (near Civic Center BART). 7-9 pm. Admission is free, but we ask that you buy food and/or drink at the cafe if you can: Wicked Grounds has beverages, light snacks, full meals, and milkshakes made of literal awesome sauce. We meet at Wicked Grounds on the first Tuesday of every month: we also meet in Oakland, on the third Thursday (the Oakland Social Club isn’t happening in December, but it’ll be back in January).
